Google promotes Chrome in security email with new login with Microsoft Edge
Google recommends users use the Chrome browser in security notifications in Edge. Google sends those notifications when users first sign in to their Google account in Edge on Windows. It is not known whether Google will do this by default from now on.
“Get the most out of Windows 10 with the Chrome browser”, says the security email that users receive from Google when they first log in to a Google account with Edge on Windows 10. Google offers the possibility to download Chrome directly from the mail, TechDows noted.
It is not known whether the security email with Chrome advertising is standard. Google is already promoting Chrome for Edge users across several services, such as Translate, Gmail, News, and the search engine. Microsoft has been basing Edge on Chromium since last year, the open source project on which Google’s Chrome was also developed.
from a 2017 Twitter post turns out that Google previously promoted Chrome with a new login via Edge. Back then, Edge was still based on Microsoft’s EdgeHTML. Conversely, Microsoft sometimes advertises Edge in different places in Windows 10. Often these types of promotions are tests to see what the effect of the promotion is. For example, Microsoft tested Edge suggestions for Firefox users in the Windows 10 start menu. When searching for Chrome with Windows 10’s search function, Microsoft also recommends Edge. This is not a test and the suggestion cannot be turned off.
Microsoft and Google are engaged in a renewed browser battle with Microsoft’s move to Chromium. According to Statcounter, Chrome has a relatively stable market share of around seventy percent. That statistics service does not yet publish figures about Edge on Chromium. Edge Legacy, the browser with EdgeHTML, had a market share of less than five percent in March. The ‘Other’ category, which includes Edge on Chromium but also a number of other browsers, now has a slightly higher market share than Edge Legacy.
