Google will put online details of its first proprietary chip for data centers on Thursday. The chip is a physical security for servers. If the Google chip detects hardware tampering, it prevents a server from booting.

Google has named the chip Titan, Reuters news agency reported. Titan is a physical security for data centers, with which Google hopes to distinguish itself from the software solutions of competitors such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS. Google already talked about Titan in March.

With the chip, it aims to gain a larger market share in the web storage market. Google has an estimated 7 percent share of this cloud services market. Google is reportedly already using Titan to secure servers for its own services like Gmail.

The search giant will post a blog post online on Thursday detailing Titan’s technical details. It’s not Google’s first step into the chip market. It previously presented its own hardware for making calculations for artificial intelligence. Google is also said to be working on its own soc for smartphones, following the likes of Apple, Samsung and Huawei.
