Google has announced that it will present the new version of Android, which until now has only been marked with the letter O or with version number 8, on Monday 21 August. So far, four developer previews have been released.

The search giant has created a special site for the event, which will count down to Monday 20:40 local time. The presentation coincides with a solar eclipse in the US, which is why Google refers to the site as eclipse. Google has released four test versions so far, the last of which became available at the end of July. The actual release will follow on Monday, which can be followed via a live stream.

The developer previews indicate that Android O focuses on improved battery life, among other things, by imposing automatic limits on what apps can do in the background. The software will limit apps in the field of ‘implicit broadcasts’, ‘background services’ and ‘location updates’.

Version 8 also marks the arrival of notification channels, picture-in-picture, multi-screen support, better keyboard handling, color profiles, support for Sony’s ldac and Qualcomms aptX and aptX-HD bluetooth audio codecs, and dynamic icon shapes. In addition, there is Project Treble, with which Google separates the Android OS Framework from the ‘vendor implementation’ for faster updates.

As always, Monday will also be known what the name of this Android version will be. For example, version 7 was called Nougat and version 6 was known as Marshmallow. That the new version will be called Oreo seems obvious, since that was mentioned in a video title and smartphone nice Evan Blass already gave a taste. published.
