Google will support the HDR standard HDR10+ with its Play Movies service. The service has been offering HDR movies for some time, but until now the content offered is not yet available in an HDR standard with dynamic metadata.

Samsung, the main company behind the open HDR standard HDR10+, reports that Google Play Movies & TV will support HDR10+ for its UHD titles. In addition, the range of movies with HDR10+ on Google Play Movies seems to depend on the number of UHD Blu-rays that are equipped with HDR10+. So far there aren’t that many.

Furthermore, Samsung reports that OnePlus, Oppo and Realme and Xiaomi have promised support for hdr10+ for their mobile devices. This means that users of certain phones from these manufacturers may be able to play and record videos with this HDR standard. In addition, receiver manufacturers have promised support, such as Onkyo and Pioneer.

Samsung tries to stimulate the use and support of hdr10+ as much as possible, in order to have a counterpart to the Dolby Vision standard. Unlike HDR10, both standards use dynamic metadata, although Dolby Vision is still much more dominant than HDR10+. For example, Panasonic and Philips were in the HDR10 + camp for a while, but now also offer support for Dolby Vision on their televisions.

It seems that Google Play Movies will also receive support for Dolby Vision in the near future. That concluded XDA Developers late last year based on code in apk version v4.17.22 of Google Play Movies. It is not yet clear whether this will actually happen and when.
