Google Play Movies catalog shows first movie with Dolby Vision

Google has placed the first movie with Dolby Vision in the Google Play Movies catalog. At the end of last year there were already indications that Google would eventually start offering films with Dolby Vision. The company seems to have started this now.

In the Google Play Movies app on a television, the Joker movie page shows that the film can not only be viewed in 4k and with HDR, but that Dolby Vision is also available. In the browser at the Movies section of Google Play, this can also be seen on the page of this film. According to the website FlatpanelsHD, in addition to Joker, the film A Simple Favor is also available with Dolby Vision, although that does not seem to be the case everywhere. Currently there are no other movies in Google Play Movies available with Dolby Vision, but that will probably change gradually and Google will soon make more titles available with this HDR format with dynamic metadata.

There is another, competing HDR standard that, unlike the ubiquitous HDR10, also uses dynamic metadata: HDR10+. At the beginning of this year it became clear that Google will offer content with this standard in its Play Movies service, although that has not yet happened. There were also indications earlier that the arrival of films with Dolby Vision was coming, but Google has not officially said anything about it.

Google Play Movies has been offering movies with HDR for some time, but until now that was not the case for Dolby Vision. In that respect, Google’s service is considerably behind Apple TV, for example. Apple’s service has a huge laundry list of more than six hundred titles that are available in 4k and Dolby Vision. Apple TV also offers Dolby Atmos in some cases, although this concerns the lossy variant that is offered via Dolby Digital Plus. This audio format is also still missing from Google Play Movies. Netflix is ​​another great streaming platform that offers quite a bit of Dolby Vision content.
