Google Pixel 6a with Tensor-soc will be released at the end of July and will cost 459 euros – update
Google will release its Pixel 6a smartphone on July 28. This smartphone gets the same Tensor soc found in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, but uses an older 12.2-megapixel sensor for the primary camera. The phone will cost 459 euros.
The design of the Google Pixel 6a is similar to that of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The device will have a back with a two-tone finish and a ‘camera strip’. With its flat 6.1 “amoled screen, the Pixel 6a is slightly smaller than the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which have a 6.4″ and 6.7” panel respectively. Under the screen is an optical fingerprint scanner.
The Pixel 6a will again get a Google Tensor soc, just like the two higher positioned Pixel 6 models. That is Google’s first self-designed soc, which has two Cortex X1 cores at 2.8GHz, two Cortex-A76 cores at 2.2GHz and four more efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz. The soc is produced at Samsung at 5nm. Google does not say how much storage and memory the device will get during its I/O keynote, but EvLeaks publishes a specification list on Twitter which mentions 6GB Lpddr5 memory and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage. The list also states that the screen will have a refresh rate of 60Hz.
The Pixel 6a also has two camera sensors. The primary camera uses a 12-megapixel sensor, where the higher-positioned models offer a resolution of 50 megapixels. According to previous rumors, the Pixel 6a will get the same primary sensor that was already used from the Pixel 3 through the Pixel 5.
There is also a 12-megapixel sensor behind the ultra-wide-angle lens. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro also have an ultra-wide-angle camera with a 12-megapixel sensor. This makes the primary camera the main difference between the Pixel 6a and the higher-positioned Pixel 6, along with the lower refresh rate of the smaller screen. The front camera again has an 8-megapixel resolution and is incorporated in a punch-hole in the screen. The Pixel 6a will also receive support for 5G, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
The Google Pixel 6a will be released on July 28 and pre-orders will start a week earlier. The device comes with Android 12 at release. Google promises to provide the phone with security updates for five years. The smartphone will be available in black, white and green. The phone will cost 459 euros upon release, according to a webpage on the German Google Store. Previous Pixel devices were not officially available in the Benelux.
Update, 21.34: The Pixel 6a has now appeared in the German Google Store. The phone costs 459 euros there. This has been added to the article.
