Google patent application describes screen that folds in two places plaatsen

A patent recently filed by Google indicates that the company is considering developing a foldable screen. The technology that Google is experimenting with differs from existing foldables in that the screen can be folded in two places.

Most of the sketches from the patent, first spotted by Patently Mobile, show a screen closely related to the foldable displays of the Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold. However, there is also a drawing showing a screen that can be folded in two places, creating a kind of z-shape. In this way, even larger mobile devices could be folded compactly.

The patent describes an OLED panel that can be folded repeatedly and is intended for a ‘modern computing device’. The word smartphone does not appear once in the entire document.

The filed patent is remarkable, according to The Verge, because Google has never produced its own display. The company has long outsourced the production of hardware for its Pixel products to companies such as Foxconn, HTC and LG. Should the double folding screen eventually see the light of day, there is therefore a good chance that its production will also be outsourced to a partner.
