Google no longer wants to display URL in Chrome in the future
Google plans to replace the URL in Chrome in the future with another way to represent a website’s identity. The search giant is not yet sure how that should be done and it is unknown when Chrome will stop displaying URLs by default.
Google wants to get rid of URLs because many people would have a hard time understanding them, which could allow malicious parties to manipulate URLs, said Adrienne Porter Felt, CEO of Google’s Chrome division, in an interview with Wired. In addition, they would not be good at displaying the identity of a website.
That is why Google wants to replace the URL with another way of identifying websites, but the company is not yet sure how that should be done. In any case, it should be clear to every user which site they are on. Google is now looking at how people use URLs and wants to come up with alternatives. It is also important to be able to easily share web pages with others.
Google has already tried to show only the domain without all the elements after the /, but that turned out to be unsuccessful. The company came under a lot of criticism and Google removed the function from the browser.
