Google: Nexus devices will get security updates for up to three years from now

Google promises to patch Nexus devices monthly for security vulnerabilities starting Wednesday, while continuing to provide its devices with security updates for up to three years. It is a response from Google to the Android leak Stagefright.

Google will begin rolling out the first update under the new policy on Wednesday, which includes a fix for the Stagefright vulnerability, the most serious Android vulnerability to date. In addition, Google promises monthly updates for security vulnerabilities in Android. Those updates are coming to Nexus devices.

This makes Google the second manufacturer to respond to Stagefright by distributing updates more frequently. Samsung announced on Wednesday that it would distribute monthly updates for its Galaxy devices.

In addition, Google promises to provide longer support for Nexus devices. Where that was until now limited to eighteen months, the manufacturer promises to provide its own line of smartphones and tablets with Android updates for two years. It will provide security updates up to three years after the device’s release, or at most eighteen months after sales stop on the Play Store.
