‘Google Nest Wifi with Wi-Fi 6 is coming’

Google is reportedly working on a new version of its Nest Wifi mesh router, which will be equipped with Wi-Fi 6 and possibly even Wi-Fi 6E. The design of this renewed Nest Wifi will also resemble the Google Wifi. This is reported by sources from 9to5Google.

Current versions of Google’s Wi-Fi equipment all still use 802.11ac, or Wi-Fi 5, and the older standards. In addition to using Wi-Fi 6 and possibly 6E, the routers would also be available in different colorways. There is no potential release date yet and it is unclear whether it will also function as a smart speaker, like the Nest Wifi does. Furthermore, 9to5Google speculates that it would make sense for the new Nest Wifi to be unveiled at next fall’s Pixel 7 event.

If Google indeed has the intention to upgrade its routers to newer standards in the field of Wi-Fi, then it is lagging behind quite a bit. The most recent device from Google’s range, the Google Wifi gen 2, was released in mid-2021. The oldest Wi-Fi 6 equipped router in the PriceWatch is from 2018.

The current Google Wifi and Nest Wifi routers are able to provide areas of 85 to 120 square meters with WiFi reception. The WiFi routers have two gigabit Ethernet connections and are equipped with an ac1200 module. The routers can achieve a maximum speed of 1.2 Gbit/s. With Wi-Fi 6, that theoretically becomes a maximum of 9.6 Gbit/s.

The new Nest Wifi that 9to5Googles sources are talking about is going to look like these 2016 Google Wifi routers again
