“Google Nest Wifi with Wi-Fi 6 is coming”
Google is reportedly working on a new version of its Nest Wifi mesh router, which will feature Wi-Fi 6 and possibly even Wi-Fi 6E. The design of this updated Nest Wifi will also resemble the Google Wifi. Sources of 9to5Google report this.
Current versions of Google’s Wi-Fi equipment all still use 802.11ac, or Wi-Fi 5, and the older standards. In addition to using Wi-Fi 6 and possibly 6E, the routers would also come in different colorways. There is no potential release date yet and it is unclear whether it will also function as a smart speaker, as the Nest Wifi does. Furthermore, 9to5Google speculates that it would make sense for the new Nest Wifi to be unveiled at next fall’s Pixel 7 event.
If Google does indeed intend to upgrade its routers to newer Wi-Fi standards, it is lagging behind in this. The most recent device from Google’s range, the Google Wifi gen 2, was released in mid-2021. The oldest Wi-Fi 6 equipped router in the PriceWatch dates from 2018.
The current Google Wifi and Nest Wifi routers are able to provide WiFi reception in areas of 85 to 120 square meters. The WiFi routers have two gigabit Ethernet connections and are equipped with an ac1200 module. The routers can reach a maximum speed of 1.2 Gbit/s. With Wi-Fi 6, this theoretically increases to a maximum of 9.6Gbit/s.
The new Nest Wifi that 9to5Google’s sources are talking about would start to look like these Google Wifi routers from 2016 again
