‘Google may face charges in the US over dominance of the advertising market’

Google itself claims that it is not that dominant in that market, because it faces stiff competition from the likes of Meta, Amazon and Microsoft, all of which are also active in the online advertising market.

Bloomberg provides few details about what legal arguments the US department would use in the case. There is already a case going on about Google’s search engine and the deals the company has made with carriers and smartphone makers to include its search engine on phones. That case will go to trial in September.

Google is under scrutiny in many countries due to its dominant market position. In India, the company must ensure this week that smartphone makers are no longer required to supply apps if they want to include the Play Store with their phones. The watchdog in the United Kingdom is looking, among other things, at the market for mobile browsers. In the EU, Google was fined billions for abusing its dominance of Android.
