Google makes Gmail logs available to Apps admins

Google has made it possible for organizations using its Apps service to search Gmail logs. This should make it easier for administrators to gain insight into email traffic within the organization.

According to Google, which announced the feature on its weblog, administrators cannot view the content of the emails, but things such as subject, sender, recipient and date can be made transparent. Administrators can also check with Gmail log search whether emails have actually been delivered and whether they have attachments.

The log feature is built by Google with its own BigQuery technology. This makes it possible to quickly search large amounts of data stored in the cloud. The internet giant makes the new service immediately available for Google Apps for Business. Government and educational institutions that use Google Apps can also use Gmail log search.
