Google is working on a new operating system codenamed ‘Fuchsia’
Google is working on an operating system that the company codenames ‘Fuchsia’. The OS is built from the ground up and seems intended for smartphones and PCs as well as other form factors. The internet giant has not yet publicized the system itself.
Phoronix writes that based on a Git repository from Google. The commit ‘fuchsia’ shows only the phrase “Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)”, or “pink + purple == Fuchsia, a new operating system”.
Fuchsia is built around Magenta and LK, or Little Kernel. Magenta is built on LK inside, but the layers above it are new. The developers write about this: “Magenta has the concept of a process but LK does not. A Magenta process is made up of LK-level constructs such as threads and memory.
It is not yet clear what the exact purpose of the system is. For example, it is not known whether Google actually wants to develop a completely new operating system that the company will deploy or release. The language used is Dart, a language the company developed a few years ago and the framework is Mojo.
The licenses used are Apache 2.0 and MIT. These licenses make it easier for developers to create closed source products for the OS, something that is more difficult with GNU Public License.
