Google is experimenting with the address bar at the bottom in Chrome for Android

Google is experimenting with moving the address bar in Chrome for Android from the top of the browser to the bottom. The new position makes it easier for large phone users to enter a new URL or search query.

The new position is clearly still an experimental feature, says Android Police. First, it’s only in the Canary version of Chrome for developers, and second, the address bar at the top simply leaves a white space, while in the final version, it’s presumably the web page extends to the top of the screen.

Chrome requires users to tap the address bar when entering a new URL or search query, which can be a pain on large phones. Placing the url bar down as an option can be a solution for that.

The feature is called Chrome Home, although it’s unknown why it bears that name. The function can be found by entering “chrome://flags/#enable-chrome-home” as the url in Chrome Dev or Chrome Canary, setting the function to enabled and then restarting the browser.

It is unknown when the option to move the address bar to the bottom will be part of the stable version of Chrome. Google has not yet announced the feature publicly. Chrome would therefore not be the first mobile browser with the address bar at the bottom. Internet Explorer and later Edge in Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile have had the address bar at the bottom for years.
