Google Introduces VirusTotal Uploader for OS X
Google has released VirusTotal Uploader for OS X users. The tool makes it possible to upload suspicious files to Google, after which 52 different virus scanners check them for the possible presence of malware.
With the VirusTotal Uploader for Windows files can be uploaded for some time. This tool makes it possible, for example, to upload files for a check via the context menu in the Windows explorer. Again, Google’s VirusTotal system uses 52 scanners. It can also check URLs for suspicious activities and monitor processes in Windows. Now Google has taken the step to release a similar scan tool for OS X as well.
In addition to a drag-and-drop upload function, the tool also offers the possibility to check files via the Finder with the ‘open with’ command. The tool is compatible with both OS X 10.8 and 10.9, according to Google.
Google says the new tool for OS X will improve the security of users of Apple’s operating system by detecting more malware. In addition, antivirus companies can examine files uploaded to VirusTotal more closely, for example for new methods that malware developers have devised.
