Google hints at the arrival of a new Pixel laptop or tablet
Google hints at the arrival of a new Pixel product as a successor to its Pixelbook and Pixel Slate. The company referred to this during its Cloud Next 2019 conference. It is not yet known when the new device will be announced
During the “Google Hardware for Business” presentation, product manager Steven Jacobs told 9to5Google that a new product is coming for people who want to be productive on the go. “We think there are some unique things we can do differently than with the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate that will help people work in today’s cloud society,” Jacobs said.
Something that supports the possibility of a new Pixel laptop or tablet is that Jacobs indicates on his LinkedIn page that he leads three projects at Google: the Pixelbook, Pixel Slate and ‘Emerging’. What that exactly means is not yet clear. The description for the Cloud Next event states that the team is working on finding innovative ways to work on personal computers.
The Pixelbook, which came on the market in 2017, is aimed more at people in top positions such as executives, according to Google. The Pixel Slate was released in 2018 and is aimed more at customer-oriented teams, medical professionals and creatives. It is still unclear what interpretation a possible new Pixel should give to the line-up. The Pixelbook and Pixel Slate both came out in October in 2017 and 2018.
Last month, Google reportedly downsized its “Create” division for Pixel laptops and tablets. The company is said to have requested dozens of employees temporarily other jobs at parent company Alphabet Inc. to go looking. This would affect the roadmap and the number of Pixel products going forward.
