Google ends support for Chrome apps on OS X, Linux and Windows
Google has announced that Chrome apps on Windows, OS X and Linux operating systems will no longer be supported. Later this year, new Chrome apps will only work on Google’s own Chrome OS.
The news was reported by Google itself on one of its blogs. The intention is that support for Chrome apps on operating systems other than Google’s own Chrome OS will be gradually phased out. That will begin later this year, when new applications appearing in the application store will no longer be available to users running Linux, Windows or OS X. However, the exact date for this transition has not been released by Google.
It is then planned that in the second half of next year the application store for Chrome apps will no longer offer access for users on Linux, Windows or OS X. Finally, all installed apps will no longer function in early 2018.
Google advises developers of Chrome applications to switch to web applications. The rapid development of web applications is also the reason that Google chooses to phase out Chrome apps. Despite this, support on Chrome OS will continue to exist for the time being; Google is not responsible for this. The internet giant also continues to make improvements for applications on Chrome OS, although the details are lacking.
