Google demands $4 million from Oracle after lawsuits

Google demands that Oracle pay its legal costs after a protracted legal battle. Oracle had unsuccessfully filed lawsuits against the internet giant for copyright infringement and infringement of several patents.

The costs in the lawsuits with Oracle would have been just over 4 million dollars for Google, according to documents that have been put online by Wired, among others. Of that, no less than $2.9 million is said to have been spent on making copies of documents used in the lawsuits.

Google is likely to demand compensation for legal costs because the company was found innocent in lawsuits filed by Oracle, with nearly all court decisions in favor of the internet giant. According to the court, Google does not infringe Oracle patents for its Android operating system, nor was infringement of the Java copyright proven.

Oracle initially demanded more than a billion dollars in damages, but because the court declared patents invalid on a number of occasions, the company had to lower its claim. Google later offered to pay relatively small damages of several million dollars, but Oracle declined.
