‘Google considers investment in internet cable under the Pacific Ocean’
Google is rumored to be considering investing in a new Internet cable that will be laid under the Pacific Ocean to connect the United States and Asia. The cable should mainly transport information between Google’s data centers.
That reports The Wall Street Journal citing its sources. Google would consider investing millions of dollars in a ‘trans-Pacific’ cable. With this, the internet giant would like to exercise more control over the data it transports over different networks. With its own connection, for example, Google can prioritize internet traffic that it has over its internal networks. The mainland connections would be made between the US state of Oregon and Japan, according to The Wall Street Journal.
When laying connections under the ocean, several cables are often bundled together, in order to reduce the costs for the participating companies. It is not yet clear which parties Google wants to work with. The exact construction plans have not yet been made public. According to The Wall Street Journal, the construction of the cables under the Pacific Ocean will take at least a year.
If the rumors are true, it wouldn’t be the first time Google has invested in such a connection. In 2010, a connection was also made under the Pacific Ocean, in which Google has invested 300 million dollars.
