Google confirms that Project Ara will be discontinued
Google has confirmed previous coverage of Project Ara shutting down. That means that, at least for now, the development of modular smartphones will come to an end. Initially, the plan was to release a developer phone in the fall.
A Google spokesperson informed Venturebeat. Although the Google employee said that Project Ara is being shelved, no further details were given about the reasons behind it. The confirmation does mean that there will be no modular smartphones from Google on the market.
Reuters previously said, citing anonymous sources, that Google plans to discontinue Project Ara. According to the sources, this has to do with an action to reduce the number of hardware products. There is a possibility that Google will give the technology for building modular smartphones to other companies, whether or not in the form of a license.
