Google confirms that it was working on a second foldable, ‘it was not yet good enough’
Google confirms it has worked on another foldable phone in the past, but says it wasn’t “yet good enough.” There were previously rumors about a clamshell Pixel foldable like the Galaxy Z Flip phones.
“There was another foldable model that we had created and we had the discipline to say, no, this isn’t good enough yet,” says Ivy Ross, vice president of product and services design in a Google podcast. The team wanted to wait until there was a product that was “good enough or better than what is on the market.” That ultimately became the Pixel Fold, which Google announced earlier in May.
In the podcast, Ross does not say what kind of device Google had in the works and why it was not good enough. It is also unclear whether Google is still working on this device. In addition to the Pixel Fold, which was internally called Passport or Pipit, Google was also working on a Jumbojack foldable. The Jumbojack would be a foldable in the style of the Galaxy Z Flip. According to a previously leaked roadmap, such a clamshell device could appear in 2025, depending on how the Pixel Fold is received.
