Google Calendar stops sending reminders by SMS
Google will stop sending text messages to users who have set reminders in Calendar. According to the internet giant, SMS has become obsolete as smartphones now have better ways to remember.
From June 27, no more reminder texts will be sent. This is evident from a notification that Google has placed on the Calendar support website. The reason for the discontinuation of SMS reminders is that this feature was introduced before the dawn of the smartphone era: devices today have more reliable and extensive possibilities to remind a user of an appointment, according to Google.
While the SMS reminder feature will disappear for regular users, Google Apps business users will not. The software packages that Google offers for educational institutions and governments will also continue to support SMS reminders.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Google is acquiring the Timeful calendar application. This is ‘smart’ calendar software that should help the user organize his time. The functions of the application will probably eventually be built into Google’s own calendar application.
