Google asks developers to fill in Android apps age target group

Google will ask all developers of Android apps and games to fill in the age of the target group. If part of the target group is under the age of 18, apps must comply with stricter rules for apps.

If developers fill in that an app is for over 18 years, nothing changes, says Google. If the target group is partly or entirely minors, new rules apply regarding content in the app or game and the way personal data is processed. Ads must also come from networks that comply with Google’s rules on advertising for children.

The rules aim to make apps and games in the Play Store safer for use by minors. Developers can indicate various age groups in the Play Store. Google also uses the promotional materials for apps and games to determine the age group, but it’s unclear how that happens. Developers must have indicated the age before September 1.

If an app or game is aimed at minors and adults, there must be a neutral screen on the first startup, after which minors are presented with the app differently. The app can also comply with the rules regarding apps for minors in its entirety, so that screen is not necessary.
