Google appears to be working on ‘screenshot search’ feature

Google seems to be working on a feature to perform a search based on a captured screenshot. The most recent apk of the Google app contains traces of this so-called Smart Screenshots function.

According to 9to5Google, which found the feature in the apk of Google app 10.61, Smart Screenshots is sort of an amalgamation of two existing features in the application: “Edit and share screenshots” and “What’s showing on my screen?”

When a screenshot is taken with the Google app, a renewed toolbar would appear. It still offers options to edit and share the image, but also includes the Lens component. When the user clicks on it, the Google app will ‘visually search’ for images that closely resemble the screenshot.

It’s not clear whether the feature only works for screenshots taken with the Google app itself or also for the screenshots taken from other applications.

Lens has been part of the Google app for some time now. The function allows users to recognize objects, copy and translate texts, and purchase products online via their smartphone camera. Integration with the screenshots feature could indicate that Lens may eventually upgrade the “What’s showing on my screen?” will be completely replaced.
