Google announces measures after complaints about the Pixel 2 XL screen

Google has announced that it is addressing the Pixel 2 XL’s screen issues. Customers worldwide get a two-year warranty on the phone, the screen gets a new mode with more saturated colors and the screen can be less bright after an update to save the pixels.

The two-year warranty is much longer than customers would get standard in many countries, and now comes standard with every Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Google says. With that, customers should rest assured to buy the device, despite all the screen problems that have been reported in recent weeks.

In addition, Google comes with an update to display more saturated colors, similar to the screen of the first Pixel phone. The search giant says that the OLED screen is tuned to display natural colors, but that the colors displayed should be a choice of users.

The update will take various measures to prevent burn-in. For example, the button bar at the bottom will fade out if the user does not use the phone for a while. In addition, more apps get a light status bar at the top. Finally, Google lowers the maximum screen brightness, a measure that would be barely visible to users, but that would reduce the load on the screen.

The forum posts are Google’s response to the problems with its most expensive smartphone. The Pixel 2 XL has an OLED screen from LG, unlike the Samsung screens of the smaller Pixel 2 and the first Pixel phones. The problems mainly came to the fore among reviewers. The Pixel 2 XL has only been released in the United States so far. A release in other countries, including Germany, will follow in a few weeks.
