Google adds VPN support to Linux containers on Chrome OS

Chrome OS users will soon be able to connect Linux applications to Google’s operating system via VPN. The support for this is already present in the Dev channel of Chrome OS 75.

Google has released Chrome OS 75.0.3770.10 to users in the Dev channel and it contains vpn support for Linux containers. The VPN connection works via the VPN settings of Chrome OS itself as well as via Android, notes Keith Myers, who tested it with an OpenVPN application on Android.

Android apps have been able to connect via VPN on Chrome OS for some time. The addition for Linux apps is useful for developers and business users, among others, who often have to set up secure connections due to company policy. It can also benefit users who use Wi-Fi networks in public places.

Support is limited to Chrome OS’s dev channel for now. The stable release of Chrome OS 75 is expected in mid-June.
