Google adds support for one-handed typing to Android keyboard

Google has released a major update to its stock Android keyboard. In version 5.0 it is possible, among other things, to type with one hand and to move the cursor in the text by using the space.

Moving the cursor works by moving the finger sideways over the space button, eliminating the need to select a spot in the text itself. The ability to type with one hand works by moving the keyboard to the left or right side of the screen. This means that a smaller distance to the keys has to be bridged.

In addition, the update introduces the ability to adjust the height of the keyboard and remove word suggestions by dragging them from the suggestion bar. Google is now also showing an opt-in box, which allows the user to indicate whether they agree that typing behavior is saved and shared to improve text predictions, Ars Technica reports.

Finally, the Holo theme has been removed and an option has been added to display the border of keys. The update is now available via the Play Store.
