Google acquires video editing software maker Fly Labs

Fly Labs has announced that it will be acquired by Google. The start-up is best known for its video editing software. Google is likely to use the team behind Fly Labs to develop such software for its services.

The acquisition was announced on the Fly Labs website. The company’s employees will work for Google and join the Google Photos team. It therefore seems that it concerns a so-called ‘acquihire’, in which it is mainly about the people behind the company, and not so much the developed technology. Google’s Photos service was announced earlier this year, so it looks like it will get improved support for video in the future.

Fly Labs has created a number of video editing applications for iOS. This makes it possible, among other things, to quickly edit videos. There are also separate apps for cropping videos or adding delays or creating timelapses. These apps, which according to the maker have been downloaded about 3 million times, will remain available for the time being and will be offered for free from now on. However, the software will be removed from the App Store in three months.

It is not clear what Google will pay for the acquisition of Fly Labs. Typically, acquisition amounts for such small businesses are not disclosed.
