GoldenEye: Source gets biggest update since release in 2010
The Half-Life 2 multiplayer mod GoldenEye: Source has received a major update that includes new levels, game modes and characters. The graphics have also been polished up in this new version, as can be seen in the accompanying trailer.
The fans who work on GoldenEye: Source make the news known on ModDB, among others, where the mod can also be downloaded. The new levels included in the mod are Aztec, Bunker, Dam, Depot and Caverns. Players who previously played the multiplayer mode of GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 will probably recognize the names and environments. In addition, weapons such as the PP7, Klobb, D5K, Cougar Magnum and the veteran slappers also received graphical updates. The mod now includes 25 levels, 13 characters, 28 weapons, 10 game modes and 120 achievements.
While the developers have tried in several ways to modernize GoldenEye multiplayer, some things have stayed the same. For example, like its N64 counterpart, the game does not have a crosshair, but players can bring it out with a separate button. At the time, on the N64, aim assist was available when users weren’t facing the crosshair, but judging by the trailer, that’s not the case with this mod, as mice are much more accurate on their own than an N64 controller.
GoldenEye: Source is a free multiplayer mod for Half-Life 2 that has been in development for over 10 years. The fans responsible for it say their sole goal is to “create a true-to-life revival of classic GoldenEye 64 multiplayer with more modern gameplay, sound and graphics.” The game on which the mod is based, GoldenEye 007, was released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64 and was the product of the celebrated developer Rare. The various intellectual property rights for the game and related franchise belong to different parties, but so far the mod makers have not run into any problems with this.
The developers emphasize in their post that the mod is the result of volunteer work and that it would not have been possible without the support of the community. This latest update is said to be the result of ‘tens of thousands of man-hours’. They therefore encourage interested parties to help host things like servers and mirrors. According to the team, there’s also no shortage of game servers right now, so players shouldn’t have any trouble finding a game. The developers do not copy the single player of the game.
