Game distribution platform GOG comes with Galaxy, a Steam-like client to install, play and update games. The platform will also serve as a hub for multiplayer games, achievements, chats and in-game time tracking.

The Polish company announces this on its site. The beta client named GOG Galaxy is not yet available, but those interested can sign up by leaving an email address. They can then look forward to an invitation to participate in the beta program within a few days. A closed alpha has been running since last year.

GOG, previously known as Good Old Games, has been around since 2008 and initially focused on publishing older games. The company quickly became popular in certain circles because it delivers games without DRM, something that will continue to exist on the new platform. Those who buy games through the platform can download a DRM-free backup installer that can be stored elsewhere. It should also be possible to disable automatic updates, after which it becomes clear by means of a notification that there is an update of a game.

In addition to game distribution and library maintenance, the platform will also allow gamers to search for multiplayer games and participate in online games. Furthermore, achievements can be obtained and certain games will support crossplay. Through the latter option, gamers can also play against people who own the same game via Steam.

GOG further says that the platform will always be optional and that games should also be able to be played without GOG Galaxy. Previously installed GOG games can be added to the library manually, although games installed with one of the company’s later installers are automatically detected.

GOG Galaxy is available initially for Windows 7 and above and Mac OS X 10.8. Many of the GOG games are available for Linux, so a Linux client is also in the pipeline, although no date has been announced yet.
