GOG competes with Steam and Origin with Galaxy platform
Online distribution platform GOG has announced its Galaxy service. The company wants to compete with established names such as Steam and Origin. Unlike those services, games with Galaxy could also be played offline.
GOG further said in a press release that users who have purchased games from the company can play online games together with the Galaxy client. It is not necessary to use the client to play purchased games, GOG points out. However, the program ensures that they are updated and that it is possible to communicate with friends.
Galaxy gamers can also play with users of other clients, such as Steam. In this way, GOG, in its own words, wants to prevent them from being embedded in a particular platform. The first game that can be played via both clients is called The Witcher Adventure from the Polish publisher CDE Projekt. The game will be entering a closed beta soon, and GOG expects to release even more Galaxy titles this year.
GOG is known for making games accessible across multiple platforms. In March, the company announced that it had been working on Linux support for some time, which should be completed in the fall. In any case, GOG says it will support Ubuntu and Mint.
