God of War developer wants to make five sequels
The developer of the game God of War wants to make a total of five sequels. Development of the recently released ‘reboot’ of the original God of War on the PlayStation 4 took five years, but the possible sequels should be made faster.
Cory Barlog, creative director of developer Santa Monica Studio, said in a podcast from game website Kotaku that he has five sequels in mind. Since the development of the recently released God of War took five years, he was immediately asked if the making of the sequels will also take that long. According to Barlog, that is not the case.
He explains that the relatively long development phase of God of War is largely because Santa Monica Studio had to build the new game from the ground up. There was already an engine, but a lot had to be recreated. For example, adapting and renewing the engine for the battles took longer than intended. In the end, so many adjustments were made to this that just about the entire engine was rebuilt.
It is not clear whether there will actually be five sequels of God of War, partly because publisher Sony participates in the decision-making process. The ‘reboot’ of God of War came out in April and so far has been doing well in terms of sales. For example, at the end of April, the game was number 1 in a British ranking of physically sold games, even though the game is only available on the PlayStation 4.
