Gmail shows users a popup with a choice to use data for functions
Google will soon be introducing a pop-up to Gmail users with the option to enable or disable certain functions, such as automatic sorting of e-mail and entering phrases when typing. It also states which data Google uses for this.
The pop-up allows users to choose whether to keep or turn off ‘smart functions’. Google then asks whether services other than Gmail, Chat and Meet, including Assistant and Maps, can use the same data, Google writes.
It is not new to be able to disable the services, but the fact that Google presents the choice in a pop-up is new. This should encourage people to make a conscious choice to let Google use data in exchange for the functions that the services offer. “This new setting has been designed so that it takes less effort to understand the settings. This stems from what we have learned from user research and the emphasis that regulators place on understandable choices for use of data.” The popup will appear to users in Gmail in the coming weeks.
