‘Global PC market shrank by 16.2 percent last year’
According to research firms Gartner and IDC, 28 percent fewer PCs were sold worldwide during the last quarter of 2022 than during the same quarter in 2021. In all of 2022, 16.2 percent fewer PCs were shipped. The market must recover from 2024.
According to IDC approximately 292.3 million PCs were shipped worldwide last year, of which 67.2 million during the fourth quarter. Gartner puts it at 286.2 million units for the whole of 2022 and 65.3 million in the fourth quarter. According to a Gartner analyst the decline in demand for PCs is mainly due to rising inflation, higher interest rates and fears of a global recession. Many consumers also have a PC that was purchased during the corona pandemic.
According to IDC, average PC sales prices have fallen in recent months as manufacturers look to clear inventories. The research agency states that price changes may also occur in the near future. Both research firms expect demand for PCs to recover in 2024, while the first signs of recovery will be noticeable by the end of 2023, according to IDC.
The PC manufacturers with the largest global market share in 2022 were Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple and ASUS. Lenovo achieved a market share of 24.1 percent in 2022, HP 19.4 percent, Dell 17.5 percent, Apple 9.8 percent and ASUS 7.2 percent.
