Giphy launches tool to convert Vine videos to GIF
Vine users are given the option to convert their short videos to a gif file, using a tool developed by Giphy. The intention is that users can transfer their entire collection at once, while preserving the source material.
In a post on the Medium website, Giphy, a site for creating and sharing short movies in the GIF format, announced the arrival of the tool. Although it is already possible on the Giphy website to import a Vine video, it should soon be possible to transfer the entire collection to gif at once, with Giphy also saving the source file. In this way no information is lost; for example, the gifs don’t support sound.
With the yet-to-be-released tool, Giphy is responding to Twitter’s announcement that it will be shutting down Vine as part of a reorganization. The short video service will be phased out in the coming months, though Twitter has promised that the vine.co website will continue to function as an archive.
Giphy is a social network for sharing animated images. It is also possible to create gif files yourself, or to download those from others. The service has become popular in a short time, and now has more than 100 million daily active users who collectively send more than a billion GIFs every day.
