The German company Golden Delicious has developed a motherboard suitable for the Nokia N900. Users can upgrade their device with the motherboard themselves, but the company will also sell ready-made devices with the new motherboard.

The project becomes OpenPhoenux called, Wired reports. With the alternative motherboard for the N900, Golden Delicious wants to stimulate the self-upgrading of mobile devices, similar to how it is done with PCs. The motherboard that the German company offers has a soc from the Omap3 series from Texas Instruments on board and 512MB of ram. LTE support is also built in.

Users can order the motherboard from Golden Delicious to upgrade the N900 themselves. The company will also sell the N900 with a new motherboard under the name Neo900. A price of between 500 and 700 euros must be paid for this.

According to the Germans, the hardware used also makes it possible to install other mobile operating systems on the N900. For example, Ubuntu Touch, Firefox OS and modified Android versions such as Replicant are supported.

According to Golden Delicious, the Nokia N900 was chosen because the device is easy to adapt. This became apparent earlier, because several developers have developed their own modifications. For example, developers started developing their own firmware after Nokia discontinued support for the smartphone.
