General Motors invests $500 million in Lyft taxi service
The collaboration between Lyft and General Motors focuses, among other things, on offering a network of autonomous vehicles. This would make it possible for users to order a car via an app, which then drives independently to the destination.
Lyft currently offers private taxi services in 190 US cities, competing with Uber. The partnership with GM should give the company, founded in 2012, an impulse to grow even faster. It is not clear when the service with autonomous vehicles will become available. It would now be about integrating existing techniques, GM chairman Dan Ammann told The Wall Street Journal.
The direct result of the collaboration is, among other things, that Lyft drivers can use GM’s cars at reduced prices, for example by renting them. The two companies are not the only ones that focus on developing self-driving cars for the transport of private individuals, Google and Uber, among others, are conducting research into the use of autonomous vehicles. Also, despite the corresponding service, the valuation of Uber and Lyft differs greatly. The latest valuation of Uber came down to 59.5 billion euros, while Lyft’s amounts to 5 billion euros.
