General Mobile has not released any updates for its GM6 smartphone since October 2018, and there are no more updates. The Android One device that came out in 2017 should have received updates until 2020. There would be a problem with hardware.

General Mobile confirms to the Consumers’ Association that the device will no longer receive updates. According to the Turkish manufacturer, it can no longer release it because there are problems with a part in the device. The supplier of that part would be bankrupt, which means that the problem cannot be solved. It is not clear which part is involved.

The General Mobile GM6 came out in July 2017 and it is an Android One device. Smartphones within that program will receive an upgrade to a new Android version twice and monthly security updates for three years. The GM6 has received one upgrade, from Android 7 to 8. The device should also have received Android 9, but that is not happening. Until July 2020, the device should have received security updates, but no updates have been released for the GM6 since October 2018.

General Mobile wants to compensate owners of the GM6 by giving a 50 euro discount on a GM8 or newer device. The Consumers’ Association considers this a meager compensation, because it is of no use to customers who have lost confidence in the brand and want to switch.

According to the Consumers’ Association, the GM6 was mainly sold between July 2017 and August 2018. After that, residual stock was sold. At the time of writing, the device is still in the Pricewatch at one store.
