Game developer The Coalition will use Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 engine for future titles. That makes the studio behind the Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 known. The company would use the engine for multiple unannounced games.

The studio reports in one blog post known that the company will use Unreal Engine 5 to develop next-gen games. The studio is working on multiple titles, but the company reports that these games will not be announced in the short term. “Moving to a new engine is quite an undertaking, so we want to make it clear that we won’t be announcing any new projects or titles for now.”

The company also announced that Operation 7 and Operation 8 for Gears 5 will be released this year. These two operations would be two each drops with new characters, playing fields and in-game events. Throughout 2021, the developer would also storerelease updates with new content.

The Coalition was founded by Microsoft in 2010 and has been developing Gears of War games since 2015. The studio has, among other things, made the Ultimate Edition of the first Gears of War game. Gears of War 4, Gears 5 and Gears Tactics have been developed in full by The Coalition. The studio has not yet announced which next-gen games the company is working on, but it is likely that these will be exclusive games for the Xbox Series consoles and Windows PCs. The games must be released ‘in the coming years’.

Unreal Engine 5 was announced by developer Epic Games last year. Unreal Engine 5 gets several new features compared to the previous Unreal Engine version. These features should provide more realistic games.

Epic Games showed last year for example Lumen, a lighting technology for dynamic realtime global illumination included in Unreal Engine 5. Lumen would be less heavy than real-time ray tracing, Epic Games said in an interview with last year Digital Foundry. Nanite would also allow developers to simultaneously import billions of polygons to the engine. In practice, Nanite should provide more detailed geometry. Unreal Engine 5 will be released later this year.
