Gearbox is looking for someone to detect typos in code

Earlier this week there was an outcry about the bug previously found in the artificial intelligence of the aliens in Aliens: Colonial Marines. This turned out to be caused by a typo in an ini file. Gearbox is now looking for someone to track down such typos in code.

Gearbox has put a job advertisement online in which it is looking for a Programming Copy Editor. The editor’s job is simple: check all code processed in the studio’s games for typos. The studio does not place many demands on the editor: he or she only has to ‘get satisfaction from tracking down typos’, although some experience is required. To be considered for the job, an applicant must first correctly answer a question about the correct spelling: tether or teather?

The ad follows the uproar earlier this week about Gearbox’s mistake on Aliens: Colonial Marines, the shooter the studio released in 2013. A ResetEra user cited a November 2017 article in which modder jamesdickinson963 made it clear that a typo in an ini file of the game is the cause of the poor artificial intelligence of the Xenomorphs in the game. The lack of intelligence of the aliens was caused by one letter too many in a line in the configuration file. The error is therefore easy to fix by anyone who has installed the game on the PC.
