Gearbox Announces Space RTS Homeworld 3 With Late 2022 Release Date
Gearbox Publishing has announced rts game Homeworld 3. This game, developed by Blackbird Interactive, has to take place in space, just like the first parts in the series. The game can be pre-ordered via crowdfunding, players can also indicate what they want to see in the game.
According to the Fig page, the game will get the same 3d combat and rts elements as the original turn-of-the-century Homeworld games. The story will also pick up where Homeworld 2 ended. Ingame images do not show the makers yet; the game has only been in pre-production for a few months. However, the developers are already coming out with it, so that fans of the game can already let us know what they want to see in the game.
That communication from fans to developers is also why the game is being sold through crowdfunding. The makers state that the money for the project has already been received, so there are no goals that can be achieved if more money is collected. The target collection amount of one dollar was therefore exceeded by more than two hundred thousand dollars barely twelve hours after the announcement. People who pre-order through Fig will have access to a Discord channel and a survey where they can voice their wishes. The developers also promise to feedback what they do with certain wishes.
Homeworld 3 is a direct sequel to Homeworld 2. This game was released for Windows in 2003, later a Mac version was also released. The space rts is known for the spaceship battles that take place in 3d; the ships can therefore move in a spherical playing field and attack from all sides. Homeworld 1 and 2 were developed by Relic Entertainment. In between those two games, Homeworld: Cataclysm, developed by Barking Dog Studios, was also released.
This new entry in the Homeworld series will not be Blackbird Interactive’s first Homeworld game; The prequel Deserts of Kharak was released in early 2016. However, this game was set on the surface of a desert planet and lacked the signature spaceship battles of the other Homeworld games. Homeworld 3 is co-developed by people who worked on the first Homeworld games.
The developers say it’s too early for an exact release date, but they are targeting the fourth quarter of 2022. The game will at least come out for the computer, but it is not clear which operating systems and whether other platforms will be supported. Homeworld 3 can now be pre-ordered for the equivalent of 45 euros.
