Gartner: Samsung remains market leader in shrinking smartphone market
Samsung has remained the market leader in the smartphone market this summer and expanded its position compared to last year, according to analyst firm Gartner. Samsung now has a market share of 22 percent.
Samsung shipped about 80.8 million smartphones, Gartner says. That is slightly more than the 79.0 million units delivered in the summer of last year. Because fewer smartphones were delivered worldwide, the market share increased as a result.
Huawei remains number two with a market share of 14 percent, but the market share and deliveries decreased compared to the same period last year. At that time, the United States’ trade ban was already in force, but then models from Huawei with Google services were still widely available. That is no longer the case.
Xiaomi seems to be benefiting the most from Huawei’s downturn, climbing to third place with a market share of 12.1 percent. Apple is close behind, but iPhones came out later this year than in previous years. As a result, deliveries are also slightly lower. Oppo is the last manufacturer in the top five. Despite major marketing efforts in Europe, the company saw its global market share increase only slightly and deliveries declined slightly.
Gartner has calculated that the total smartphone market declined by 5.7 percent. That is a sharp drop, but a much smaller drop than during the first corona wave in spring. Before that, the smartphone market was already shrinking from time to time, especially because in many countries many people mainly replace phones, but there are hardly any new smartphone users.
