Garry’s Mod raises $30 million
Garry’s Mod, the popular sandbox based on the Source engine, has raised $30 million, developer Garry Newman announced. However, Newman’s new game Rust, which still has alpha status, would have already yielded more.
British developer Garry Newman broke the news of its $30 million turnover with Garry’s Mod known via Twitter. Garry’s Mod is a sandbox game that lets players create objects, fight them and experiment with all kinds of tools. The game was released in 2004 as a mod for Valves Half Life 2 and it was released as a standalone game in 2006. Since that year, the game has been available on Steam, but gamers must have a Valve game based on the Source engine to play it.
Newman is now working on Rust with his studio Facepunch Studios. Originally the plan was to make this a zombie survival game, but recently the makers decided to remove the zombies. The game was released in December as an alpha release and is available through Steam Early Access for $18.99. In that short time, however, Rust has become extremely popular. “If my calculations are correct”, writes In fact, Newman said, “We’ve now made more money with Rust than with Garry’s Mod: 0.34 percent more!”
