Garmin releases Forerunner 945 LTE with 4G connection via eSIM

Garmin releases two new Forerunner smartwatches. The Forerummer 945 LTE, as the name suggests, has built-in 4G via eSIM. The Forerunner 55 doesn’t have that, but both watches do have navigation.

The Forerunner 945 LTE is a successor to the regular 945, with the main extra point being that it has 4G on board. There are also many changes in the software. For example, it is possible to set up different activity profiles, such as a profile for running or swimming, or for doing breathing exercises. There is also an interval mode and the watch gives users a sleep score. Many functions focus on improving sports performance. For example, it is possible to synchronize training plans and see suggested workouts from other users. The watch is waterproof and can therefore also be used while swimming, while the heart rate monitor continues to work.

The smartwatch also has an Assistance function with which an athlete can immediately request help. The watch has NFC and internal storage for local music listening, although it is not known how much.

Garmin says the device has a maximum battery life of up to two weeks. In navigation mode, that is up to seven hours. The watch has eSIM, which allows the user to stay connected for a number of Garmin-specific services, but the watch is not suitable for making calls on its own or using other data services. Users take out a subscription directly with Garmin for 6.99 euros per month or 69.99 euros per year.

Garmin is also releasing the Forerunner 55. At 199 euros, it is a lot cheaper, but various functions of the 945 LTE are not included. For example, the local storage and NFC are missing, but certain parts are also missing in the software, such as measuring the effects of training and preparing sports lessons. The Forerunner 55 also has sleep tracking, but no sleep score. The Forerunner 55 has a battery life of twenty hours in navigation mode and two weeks in normal mode.
