Gaming sets new revenue record in US in first quarter
Video game sales in the US have reached a new high. Compared to the same period last year, 9 percent more was spent on games and consoles in the first quarter. A total of 10.1 billion euros was spent from January to March.
Games have made more money in the games and consoles subdivision. Games went to $9.58 billion, 11 percent more than last year. The biggest revenue generators, according to NPD Group, were Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Doom Eternal, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, MLB The Show 20, and NBA 2K20.
On the side of ‘hardware platforms’, developments are somewhat less clear-cut. According to NPD, Nintendo Switch sales experienced “strong growth,” which “helped offset declines in other hardware platforms.” The Switch would have ensured that the market for hardware platforms grew by 2 percent, to $ 773 million.
Undoubtedly, the growth in the game market is due to the corona virus, which means that consumers worldwide have to stay indoors much more. Gaming is one of the few leisure activities that can continue virtually unhindered despite the circumstances surrounding the virus.
