Gaming chat app Discord gets video features
After a period of testing, the developers of gaming chat app Discord have introduced their video features to all clients. Users can now share video streams from their screen or from their webcam with other users.
The video function also has a picture-in-picture function so that video streams can be shown in a corner while, for example, users have a text chat channel open at the same time. Video chat and screen sharing have been available to testers since August, but are now live for everyone, including on macOS. The video features are not yet available on the mobile versions of Discord.
According to the developer, Discord currently has 45 million users. Of these, up to four million would be logged in at the same time and 8.9 million users log in daily. The application is intended as ‘Skype for gamers’, but is also very similar to enterprise messaging app Slack. It has servers, text channels, voice channels, friends lists, DMs and the ability to see who is in a voice channel and who is speaking via an overlay in a game. Even certain settings, such as volumes, can be adjusted via the overlay.
