Game video website GameTrailers stops after thirteen years

Game video website GameTrailers is closing its doors after years of offering its services to users. The website started posting videos with reviews, trailers and guides in 2002. No specific reason is given for this decision.

The website has received new additions until the sudden announcement. For example, reviews of both Unravel and Firewatch have been posted, and a recent tip video for Xcom 2 is available. The GameTrailers founder announced on social media that February 8 was the site’s last day.

When GameTrailers started in 2002, it was one of the few game websites that used video to convey information about games. The message released on the website’s Facebook page focuses on GameTrailers’ pioneering role in releasing video games about games. Back then, virtually all content about games would have been text. “GameTrailers helped change that. Today, game journalism is mostly video,” the page notes.

In 2014, GameTrailers was acquired by Defy Media. Shortly thereafter, layoffs were made. In 2015, parts of Defy Media such as The Escapist and GameTrailers laid off a number of employees again. In December 2015, a number of changes were made to the website, including an improved video player.
