Game streaming service LiquidSky will use Radeon RX Vega GPUs
LiquidSky, a service that allows users to stream their own games from data centers to various devices, will use Radeon RX Vega GPUs. AMD announced during the Game Developer Conference that the new GPUs will be sold under that name.
AMD announced the partnership with LiquidSky during its presentation at the Game Developer Conference. The CEO of LiquidSky told the service will use Vega GPUs and he spoke about 4k streaming. Although he didn’t say literally that there will be an option to stream games in ultra-HD resolution, he did seem to refer to that. Currently, the game streaming service supports 720p and 1080p resolutions.
LiquidSky itself does not offer games, but users can install games themselves on a virtual machine. LiquidSky works on PCs running Windows, macOS and there is an Android app for tablets and smartphones. The service offers a free version with ads, a pay-as-you-go model starting at $4.99 and a $9.99 per month subscription. The service is currently in beta and it is only possible to use the service by invitation.
The LiquidSky website states that the service will be completely revamped starting March 14, with support for DirectX 12 and improved graphics performance. It is not known whether the Vega GPUs are already being used. The service also uses Nvidia GPUs.
The presentation of AMD was further dominated by software and games. For example, it was announced that GPU support for asynchronous reprojection is almost ready. That is a method of SteamVR for improving graphics performance in vr games. AMD also announced an extensive partnership with publisher Bethesda. According to AMD, this is a long-term partnership and not just for a few games. The collaboration should deliver optimizations in games with the Vulkan API. Radeon products may also be bundled with Bethesda games, but nothing has been announced yet.
AMD did not provide any concrete new details about the graphics cards based on the Vega GPU. It is not yet what the exact specifications are. The company did announce that the video cards will be sold under the name Radeon RX Vega. That choice would have been made because the name Vega is already widely used and received enthusiastically.
It is not yet clear how AMD will number the video cards if there are multiple models. However, the company made it clear at the presentation that the cards will not be given names such as RX 490 or RX 580, which went around a lot in the rumor circuit. The RX Vega GPUs will arrive in the second quarter of this year, AMD said earlier in the presentation of the quarterly figures.
