Game Freak gave a presentation on Wednesday about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which will be released for Nintendo Switch on November 18. This is how the developer discusses the gameplay and the story of the game.

The region in which the new generation takes place is called Paldea. The player is a high school student taking part in a treasure hunt competition. While traveling through the region, he encounters one of Paldea’s two Legendary Pokémon, which can be used as a means of transportation. The trailer shows that Koraidon and Miraidon can ‘drive’, but also swim and fly. The gyms return in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. As in the previous games, there are eight gyms. This time, however, the player can choose in which order he wants to complete these.

The game features a new gameplay element called Terastal. The Pokémon undergoes a transformation during battle and takes on a crystal-like appearance. In addition, the attacks of the beast become stronger. In some cases, the Pokémon’s type can also change. What type it changes to varies with individual Pokémon. For example, an Eevee can keep its original normal-type after its Terastal transformation, but other Eevee’s can become a grass-type or a water-type.

The player can encounter Pokémon with rare Tera types in the so-called Tera Raid battles. Up to four players compete against a strong Pokémon. The player does not have to wait his turn in Tera Raid battles and can fight at his own pace.

The trailer also shows two new Pokémon and a regional variant of the Pokémon Wooper. Game Freak reports that pre-orders have started. As a pre-order bonus, the player will receive a Pikachu with the Tera-type Flying. A Pikachu with this Tera type can be caught in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak says.
